The Optimisation Engine setting in MaxCut controls how cutting patterns are generated, balancing speed, efficiency, and layout consistency. You can find this setting in Settings > Layout > Optimisation Engine, or access it in Detailed Setup when running MaxCut for the first time.
MaxCut offers two optimisation engines for arranging cutting patterns:
1. MaxCut Legacy Optimisation Engine (Default)
The Legacy Optimisation Engine has been used since the beginning of MaxCut. It is fast, reliable, and produces efficient results. This engine uses an optimisation seed, a unique ID assigned to the layout. Changing the seed can result in slightly different layouts while maintaining efficiency. [Learn more about optimisation seeds here.]
2. New Optimisation Engine (Beta)
The Beta Optimisation Engine is still under development. Unlike the legacy engine, it does not use seeds—it always generates the same layout for the same input. However, it provides multiple layout options with the same wastage, but different layouts. While useful, it may slow down with larger jobs.
For most cases, the Legacy Optimisation Engine remains the best choice due to its speed and efficiency. However, the Beta Engine can be helpful if you want consistent layout results. [Look out for updates on our support center and release history.]
